Starting your school day with a healthy breakfast

Fresh fruit, cereal, yoghurt and toast are now the order of the day for many children at St. Patrick's RC Primary School in Collyhurst, Manchester, thanks to our partnership with Greggs Breakfast Club.

Hungry children statistics like those published by the Guardian are enough to tug at anyone's heartstrings and they certainly left Findel Education with the clear resolve to get stuck in and help out!

With a reported 83% of those surveyed saying they see children arrive at school hungry and over 55% saying it's a rapidly increasing problem, we jumped at the chance to become part of the Greggs Breakfast Club scheme. Started by the Greggs Foundation, the breakfast club offers free breakfasts to children at primary schools in deprived areas to ensure they get the healthy start to the day they so badly need.  They are now providing breakfast to over two million children every year.A recent report in the Mirror reported that "some [children] are so famished they have resorted to stealing food off others, eating a week's supply of break-time fruit on a Monday or nodding off from lack of nourishment."

Gary McDowell (Director of Organisational Development & People) and Oliver Hammond (from our communications team), visited St. Patrick's school recently and after speaking with the staff, the Greggs team and of course the children, it was very clear what a huge difference the Breakfast Club support makes to their health, wellbeing and learning and development in the classroom.

We also support the school through regular donations of educational equipment, encouraging the children to socialise whilst enjoying their healthy breakfast.

"A big thank you... it was like Christmas opening all the parcels. The sports equipment will be invaluable for breakfast club and has sorted out sports day for this year! I cannot tell you what a gift these resources are for our children. I know we are in austerity, but that's normal for our children, many of whom live in poverty all the time. If we can give them something extra for no cost to our overstretched budget then we have achieved something special. Your company has allowed us to do just this!" GLS sponsored the secondary school 'Business Manager of the Year' at this year's NASBM award ceremony. Taking place at the Victoria Park Plaza and overseen by Tricia Stewart, the originator and driving force behind the famous 'Alternative WI Calendar'.
    The NASBM annual awards have been running to raise the profile of school support staff and ensure that they receive the same level of recognition that the Teaching Awards provide for the teaching profession. They are one of the only national opportunities to applaud the incredible job that support staff do to support schools and academies.   

NASBM are only able to continue the awards each year due to the sponsorship that they receive, meaning that schools can enter teams and/or individuals at no cost to themselves. Other sponsors this year included RISO, Zenergi, Unison, The Education Broker, Tucasi, SafetyMARK, Easytrace and Browne Jacobson.

We are delighted to have come out as the winners ahead of Barclays, Virgin Media and other well-known finalists in the 'Best Improvement Strategy' category of the prestigious European Call Centre and Customer Service Awards (ECCCSA), held in London and hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr.   

Our company mission is to be easy to do business with and the judges recognised our hard work in improving our customer service over the last two years. We took the judging panel through our customer experience improvement journey, which included developing our Customer Charter and new Intranet site, designed to empower everyone within our company to think customer first!
